With the filming of Marvel Disney+ Series, Hawkeye now underway as of December 2nd, it should come as no surprise that the principal cast has been revealed. Previously, the only confirmed cast member was the Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, the titular character of the series.
Hailee Steinfeld had been rumoured for months to be Marvel’s top choice for the role of Kate Bishop (Hawkeye’s replacement/protege) and thanks to leaks from the set, this is now been confirmed to be true. Also, by the looks of it, Bishop will be accompanied by Lucky the Pizza Dog from Matt Fraction’s run on the Hawkeye comic book series.
Joining Renner and Steinfeld, are Marvel Studios newcomers and impressive additions Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Alaqua Cox and Zahn McClarnon. All of whom are portraying characters undoubtedly familiar to comic fans.
Vera Farmiga will be taking on the role of Eleanor Bishop, Kate’s mother. Fra Fee is set to portray Kazi (short for Kazimierz Kazimierczak), who in the comics goes by the alias “Clown”, a mercenary and enemy of Hawkeye.
Tony Dalton will be bringing a new take on Jacques Duquesne/Swordsman. In the comics, Swordsman was Barton’s mentor when he was younger and has even been a part of the Avengers. As his name suggests, he is extremely skilled in the use of blades in combat.
Alaqua Cox, getting her first major on-screen role in Hawkeye, is playing Maya Lopez/Echo, a deaf hero who took on the moniker of Ronin and who has photographic reflexes, allowing her to copy movements or actions perfectly after witnessing it once – a skill shared by Taskmaster who is set to appear in the upcoming Black Widow. Zahn McClarnon will be playing Echo’s father, William Lopez, who in the comics was an enforcer for Kingpin.
Additionally, Florence Pugh has been confirmed to reprise her role as Yelena Belova from Black Widow. Finally, Ava Russo, Ben Sakamoto and Cade Woodward have been spotted on the set reprising their roles of Lila, Cooper and Nate Barton respectively. Currently missing from the action is Linda Cardellini’s Laura Barton, Clint’s wife.
Taking into account Maya and William’s ties to Kingpin and Daredevil and also the fact that Daredevil’s rights recently reverting, it could be likely that Marvel Studios will surprise us and bring the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen into the MCU via Hawkeye providing the Man without Fear doesn’t make it into the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel. Perhaps he’ll appear in both, perhaps we’ll see Vincent D’Onforio and Charlie Cox return as the Kingpin and Daredevil? Only time will tell.
